Jamie Oliver's school dinner project

I came across a wonderful subject while working on compositions with one of my students: Food. What is healthy? What is not?
How about what children eat? Especially at school?
Jamie Oliver’s project with school dinners came to my mind and I thought it would be a great idea to talk about it in my lessons. It does not only makes the students practice their English, but it also gives them more info about healthy food and eating habits of the kids in England.
Lesson plan:
Play the video with Jamie Oliver’s efforts. (You can find several videos on you tube and more information on Jamie Oliver’s site)
Discuss about the student’s eating habits at school and at home.
You can also compare the situation in England with the one in Greece.
Ask them who is responsible?
The as homework, you can tell them to write a composition, expressing their views about the subject, writing the advantages and disadvantages of watching what you eat.
(this kind of composition can be found in both FCE and ECCE exams)
You can also download Jamie Oliver’s instructions about how to organize a junk amnesty in your school.

Great lesson planning, Theodora. Thanks for sharing these ideas. I think in this way you manage to motivate your students and give them a sense of achievement. BTW, I was discussing food the other day in class with my IGCSE students - childhood obesity in particular. It was interesting to hear about their eating habits and their opinion on junk food. Very few of them said they liked vegetables or pulses!!

Great idea. I'm going to use it with my private students over the next week.
