Conventions... auf Deutsch

A teacher is always a teacher, no matter what they teach.  Although I teach more in the English language nowadays, my first degree is on German literature and language (or better teaching German as a foreign language - DaF)

I have to admit that when you teach English, there are various seminars, presentations, conferences all year round, while in German, this is not the case.

Especially in my hometown, which is not the capital, you can't always keep learning.

Goethe Institut, Aristoteles University and some publishers do organise seminars and book presentations and I never miss the chance to go, since using the German language is not that common (if you don't work with tourists that is)

So, today was the day of the conference held by the Aristoteles University. I love conventions and conferences. My only problem is that German methodology seminars are mostly about theory and less practice. 

As a very kinaesthetic person, I am finding it very hard to concentrate when it's all talk and no play.

To my surprise today, I saw more practice, enthusiastic professors and brad new ideas for the primary classroom.

According to Dr. Rudolf Bartsch, Children learn fast but they forget equally fast, so they have to keep learning until they reach adulthood. 

Dr. Legutke mentioned that learning is an active process and students AND teachers have to be there with their "heads, hearts, hands and feet".

So some ideas for the lesson that impressed me

1. Bring a fairytale to life. Children mime the characters (people and animals), the things (houses, trees etc) and act the story out.
2. Bring objects into life. Have children make an object with their bodies (for example a washing machine, a vacuum cleaner) and repeat vocabulary. Then categorise this vocabulary (for example group kitchen appliances, furniture etc)
3. Use objects to make a presentation (for example a fashion show)
4. Create a monster and write a story or a diary about it
5. Act out as their favourite famous person (an have the others guess who it is)
6. Make a poem
7. Eat together and practise food vocabulary
8. Interview guests

I really enjoyed today's lectures. It was definitely a pleasant change. 

Learning German - Teaching Juniors (seminar report)

Last weekend I had the chance to attend Klett's seminar day, which was very informative.
What I liked the most was that although the event was organised by a publisher, which means that the target was how to sell books, people there at Klett Greece have done wonderful work presenting new trends in methodology and practical ways to teach all levels.

The session I attended was about teaching Juniors, held by the author of the book for Juniors, Ms Ulrike Kambitsis-Hetzel.
I have to say that I was pretty impressed with the energy of this teacher-author. She was very knowledgeable and had a variety of ideas for our lessons. Teaching Juniors requires a lot of stamina and ingenuity, in my opinion.
Judging from the fact that German materials in general had not reached the level of the relevant English ones, I was pleasantly surprised with this book.

Coming to the presentation, we first discussed the rituals teachers use in the classroom. Having things that you always do in class, gives the very young students security. These can be a specific greeting, various gestures, a quiet moment, a circle activity, etc.

Children learn through emotions, need variety, lots of repetitions, because although they learn easily, they forget really fast. And it would be better to learn in chunks and not an analysis of nouns, verbs and grammar that they still don't understand even in their mother tongue.
We were then shown some examples from the book, with suggestions how to use the materials and extra tips for games and more practice.

I would really like to thank KLETT Greece and Ms Hetsel for the enlightening session.
I wish I had more time to attend more sessions. Hopefully next time!

Mobile phones: activities in the classroom

Today was seminar day in German, held by a very popular publisher in Greece.
Most presentations were about their books and there was also a big book exhibition.
One thing that intrigued me to was a session about mobile phones and ways to use them in the classroom.
I thought they would introduce us to apps that we can use with our students, like some apps they have developed at Goethe Institute, games, words etc,
But, the session was more practical, using almost no apps.
Some suggestions were:

• use the video to record students mime words and then show them to class or in pairs and try to guess the words
• use video to record students introducing themselves and writing down information
• use recording device to read words or text so that other students listen to it and write dictation.
• take pictures of items and make collocations or compound words
• use the calculator to practise numbers 
• record noises to practise vocabulary
• use the weather app to talk about weather
• use your phone calendar to make dialogues about meeting on a specific time and date
• use messenger/ what's up / viber to set a date instead of speaking activity

I believe that all these ideas are very practical, but I would also suggest some apps.

• I use duolingo to practise vocabulary in different languages and the constant repetition has helped me a lot. 
• Another game that my students absolutely LOVED is The mystery of Nebra. The language level has to be A2 or more, but it is an adventure game that you will definitely enjoy.
• Another fun game to play is Der heisse Kartofel
• For more beginners, there is also Deutchtrainer A1 with  basic vocabulary practice.

I also use my phone as a dictionary, there are several online dictionaries that you can use.

Last but not least, I use You Tube to watch clips, songs and everything I can find in the target language.

Fest der Deutschen Sprache - Celebration of the German language

This weekend was full with German!!
Goethe Institut Thessaloniki has organized a celebration of the German language, full of workshops and seminars for teachers, performances by high-school and university students, poster presentations a flea market, games and many many more.

Unfortunately, the people form Goethe Institut were a bit secretive about it.... I only received their newsletter 2 days before their actual event, so as a result I missed most of it. It was really a pity to miss all this wonderful work.

I did manage to catch a couple of performances in the end of Saturday, though.
One of them was held by the students of the German School here in Thessaloniki. A performance that had it all! Theater, dance, and play. Although it lasted only half an hour, the students showed us the meaning of communication between people, no matter if they come from different countries. Using Greek, German and English, as well as drawings and dance, they made their point that we all can "find" each other. We all have a "meeting" point (Begegnung)

Another interesting presentation was the one by AUTh students, using poetry. During their workshop, they had to find poems about specific subjects like love and spring and they actually performed their favourite poems in their own way. Hopefully we will have more information on such wonderful events in the future.

Kids write in - auf Deutsch!

Das Rotmützchen

Es war einmal ein kleines Mädchen, das Afroxilanthi hieß. Dieses Mädchen war sehr böse. Sie war nie ehrlich. Sie lügte die ganze Zeit. Afroxilanthi trug eine rote Mütze, deshalb nannte man sie Rotmützchen. Ihre Großmutter war krank und jeden Tag ging Afroxilanthi zu ihr zu Besuch.
Das mochte das Mädchen nicht, weil sie jedes Mal eine neue Lüge denken sollte, um nicht zu gehen. Eines Tages ging Rotmützchen endlich zu ihrer Oma, damit sie Essen und Medikamente bringt.
Auf den Weg traf sie den guten Wolf. Der Wolf war sehr höflich und freundlich und wollte den Leuten immer helfen.
Der gute Wolf fragte sie, wohin sie ging und sie antwortete, dass sie zu ihrer Oma gehen sollte, aber sie wollte nicht.
Und dann sagte der Wolf: "Wenn du willst, kann ich dir helfen" und brachte er die Dinge zur Oma.
Das Rotmützchen war schlau. So ging sie zu ihrer Mutter und sagte dass der Wolf die Oma fraß.
Die Mutter rannte zum Haus der Oma und fand die Oma und den Wolf an dem Tisch zusammen essen.
Dann ärgerte sich die Mutter und hat das Rotmützchen gestraft. Sie sollte Freunde mit dem Wolf werden.
Der Wolf half ihr nett zu sein und keine  Lügen  mehr zu sagen

Mit Musik arbeiten

Ein wirklich tolles Lied über die Zerstörung der Umwelt und wie apathisch die Leute sind. Bevor die Schüler das Lied hören, sammeln sie Vokabeln zum Thema Umwelt. Nach dem Lied kann man eine Diskussion über die Probleme der Umweltzerstörung. Wer ist verantwortlich? Was soll getan werden?
Als Hausaufgabe kann man einen Aufsatz zum Thema schreiben.

Αλλαγές Zertifikat B1 & B1j

Ήρθε η στιγμή που και οι εξετάσεις των Γερμανικών αλλάζουν. Για ποιο λόγο? Όπως εξήγησε και η ομιλήτρια Dr. Michaela Perlmann-Balme, οι απαιτησεις αλλάζουν και οι εξετασεις πρεπει να προσαρμόζονται στις εποχές. Οι αλλαγές ισχύουν απο τον Αυγουστο 2013.
Να διευκρινήσω οτι για το Goethe Institut οι εξετάσεις Zertifikat B1 και Zertifikat B1 für Jugendliche ειναι ακριβώς το ίδιο κι έχουν την ίδια ισχύ, μόνο που αλλάζουν κάπως ατη θεματολογια για να είναι πιο φιλικά στους εφήβους.

Η καινούρια εξέταση αποτελείται απο 4 Module, καταργούνται τα Sprachbausteine εντελώς. Αντί γι αυτό, αυξάνονται οι ασκήσεις στο Lesen και το Hören και αλλάζει δομή εντελώς το Schreiben και το Sprechen.

Το καθε Modul βαθμολογειται ξεχωριστα και δινουν διαφορετικο ενδεικτικο για κάθε κομματι της εξέτασης. Αν κανεις περασει και τα 4, παίρνει Gesamtzeugnis, ενω αν περασει τα 3 απο τα 4 και μεσα στον ιδιο χρονο περασει και το τεταρτο, τοτε έχει δικαιωμα να το ανταλλάξει με το Gesamtzeugnis.

Lesen

Υπάρχουν πλεον 5 κομμάτια αντι για 3. 

65 λεπτα αντι για 90 αφου καταργουνται τα Sprachbausteine.

Το πρωτο κομματι εχει κειμενο και ασκήσεις Richtig/Falsch (6)

Το δευτερο κομματι αποτελειται απο 2 μικρα κειμενα με ερωτησεις multiple choice, συνολικά 6.

Το τριτο κομματι εχει τις γνωστές μας αγγελιες, μονο που πλέον ειναι 10 αγγελιες και 7 προτασεις και υπαρχει μόνο μια λαθος προταση αντι για 3. Επισης πλεον δεν υπαρχουν βοηθητικες εικονες.

Το τεταρτο κομματι αποτελειται απο Lesebriefe που ειναι υπερ ή κατά ενος θέματος και οι ερωτησεις ειναι με Ja/Nein (7)

Το πεμπτο κομματι εχει ενα κειμενο και 4 ερωτησεις πολλαπλης επιλογης. 

Η βαθμολογια πλεόν θα ειναι σε ποσοστο. Η βάση παραμένει 60% δηλαδη 18 απο τα 30

4 κομματια αντι για 3

40 λεπτα

Πρωτο κομματι με 5 μικρα κειμενακια (ανακοινωσεις, διαλογοι, διαφημησεις, εκπομπες κτλ) με 2 ερωτησεις το καθένα. Η μια richtig/falsch και η δευτερη πολλαπλης επιλογης. Ακουγεται 2 φορες.

Δευτερο κομματι ενα μεγαλυτερο κειμενο με 5 ερωτησεις πολλαπλης επιλογης. Ακουγεται 1 φορα.

Τριτο κομματι διαλογος με 7 ασκησεις richtig/falsch. Ακουγεται μια φορα.

Τεταρτο κομματι εκπομπη. Βρες ποιος μιλαει (παντα 3 ατομα) 8 προτασεις. Ακουγεται 2 φορες.

Παλι 18 στα 30, δηλαδη 60%

Schreiben

 60 λεπτα - 3 Aufgaben

1.  E-mail - 3 Punkte zu beantworten - 80 Wörter

2.  Meinungsäußerung zu einem Thema - 80 Wörter

3.E-Mail in Höflichkeitsform - 40 Wörter

Η αξιολογηση γινεται σε ποσοστο 100%

Τα κριτηρια ειναι :

-  Erfüllung der Aufgabenstellung max. 10 Punkte

-  Kohärenz max. 10 Punkte

- Wortschatz max. 10 Punkte

- Strukturen max. 10 Punkte

Οι βαθμοι

A: Eindeutig auf B1

B: Auf B1 einzelne Abstriche

C: Knapp unter B1

D: Deutlich unter B1

E: Nicht bewertbar

Sprechen

15 λεπτα και 15 λεπτα προετοιμασια

2 εξεταζομενοι.

Το πρωτο κομματι δεν ειναι πλεον προσωπικες ερωτησεις, ρωτανε καποια πραγματα αλλα μονο για να "σπασει ο πάγος" και δεν βαθμολογουνται.

Το πρωτο κομματι ειναι το παλιο τριτο, οπου οι εξεταζομενοι καλουνται να οργανωσουν κατι μαζι.

Αυτο που αλλαζει ειναι το δευτερο και το τριτο. Στο δευτερο πρεπει ο εξεταζομενος να παρουσιασει κατι μονος του, εχοντας να απαντησει σε 5 ερωτησεις (εχοντας κρατησει σημειωσεις πριν), μιλωντας περιπου 1-2 λεπτα.

Στο τριτο κομματι ο δευτερος εξεταζομενος πρεπει να πει τη γνωμη του για την παρουσιαση και να ρωτησει κατι πανω στο θεμα του πρωτου κι επίσης και ο εξεταστης θετει μια ερωτηση πανω στο θεμα. 

Οσον αφορα τη βαθμολογια στα 100%

Η προφορα βαθμολογειται μια φορα με 16 βαθμους, τα υπολοιπα στο καθε κομματι ξεχωριστα.

Καθε κομματι εχει διαφορετικη βαθμολογια. Θα κυκλοφορησουν συντομα βιβλιαρακια με την λεπτομεριακη περιγραφη των εξετασεων, οδηγιες για την αξιολογηση του Sprechen und Schreiben όπως και με το λεξιλογιο που πρεπει να κατεχει κανεις σ'αυτο το επιπεδο. Μετα την παρουσιαση και στην Αθηνα δεσμευτηκαν να δημοσιευσουν πληροφοριες και στο διαδικτυο οπως επισης και Modelltests.

Οι γερμανικοι εκδτικοι οικοι (Hueber, Klett, Langenscheidt) εχουν ενημερωθει απο την προηγουμενη ανοιξη (2012) και καινουρια βιβλια και Modelltests αναμενονται γυρω στον Ιουνιο.
