There used to be a time, before the pandemic, when people gathered to celebrate days of languages.
In my hometown, Thessaloniki, sometime around the end of November, a big celebration of multilingualism was held with events that lasted 3 days.
These events included lectures in different languages, art exhibitions, Story telling, language presentations, dance events, theatre and sketches from schools, Word games, presentations of school projects, taks, discussions and so much more.
Such a colourful event which does not only include language itself, but presentationσ of culture and art as well.
This goes to show that language is not as simple as grammar and syntax. Though language we can understand customs, habits and mentality. A language shows the uniqueness of a folk.
That's why there are so many celebrations of languages and that's why people honor them.
There are so many things you can do with your students to celebrate languages:
- Teach them how to say hello in different languages
- Have them make a poster with a word in various languages
- Show them videos of countries and talk about them
- Let them listen to songs in different languages
- Have a Eurovision evening with students as judges
- If you have foreign students in class, have them teach the rest of you some words in their language.
- Organise a food celebration and learn foods and ingredients in different languages!
