Skiathos

on the ship

As most of you probably know, Skiathos is a small island, which belongs to the Sporades complex (together with Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros).
This year it has been particularly popular with tourists, due to the film “Mama Mia” which was shot on a small island nearby.
Arriving to the island I saw a busy port – a crowded town… I never expected to see so many people especially after the second half of August!
What I particularly like on the island is the pedestrian zone at night! Full of little shops with useless little souvenirs, I can spend hours and hours browsing!!! Not to mention the bars, restaurants and cafes …
People, people, people … a town full of life!
But of course the island has more to offer than a wonderful night life…
It covers all interests, actually…
For culture lovers, you can visit Alexandros Papadiamantis house, he was one of the best Greek writers about 100 years ago, there is a monastery on the other side of the island (I hear the produce wonderful wine there) and there is also the old town, called the Castle. It used to be the old capital city until 1830- it was a fortress and the locals used a wooden ladder to get down to the port! The most popular one is Koukounaries, you can find all kinds of water sports, beach cafes, taverns in the area.
Finally, the beaches of Vassilias, Ahladies, Vromolimnos, Kolios, Troulos, Maratha, Agia Eleni, Agia Paraskevi, Krassas, Nikotsara, Lalaria, Megas Gialos as well as the islet Megali Tsougria worth a visit.
