Summer Recharging

This post is week 2 of 8 in the #8WeeksofSummer Blog Challenge for educators.
This year has been very challenging for all of us.
Let me share with you my routine during lockdown.
My day consisted of: cleaning, cooking, washing, studying, preparing material, teaching online. Long hours stuck sitting in front of a screen! No movement, maybe a bit more to eat, blurry, tired eyes.
Now that lockdown is over, I haven't quite adjusted to life, yet. School year got extended, exams take place a bit later, to make story short, I am still working. Some students remained online, while I have started tutoring face to face some others.
One thing I have forgotten is walking. Before March, I used to walk. Walk like 5-6 km a day. Although I was a bit overweight, I didn't look that bad. After 3 months at home, my weight has changed to the worse, unfortunately.
Now... I've started walking to my students again and the difference is huge. I get too tired too easily.
I also find myself to be less creative and I don't want to spend more hours on the computer lesson planning and creating material anymore. I find it really exhausting.
I need a holiday you would say... I do... like most of us do.
Although I don't think I will stop working completely this year (which is good, since teachers in the private sector in my country don't get paid on holidays), I just need the precious time off to recharge.
After the big intruduction, let me tell you what I am planning to do (this will give me a chance to check back to see if I have actually succeeded in completing them.

  • Do nothing time. I believe it is very important to just get away from everything and get a rest. This can be in the form of sleep  or just stay quiet for a while
  • Hit the gym / take up walking and eventually running. This has been a problem for me, since I am a totally kinaesthetic person who became a couch potato. I need to get out more.
  • Start eating more healthily. Time to cut back on meat, sweets and snacks and get some green stuff and lose some weight.
  • Do some yoga. I know this could also go to the "hit the gym" category, but it's more about slowing down, breathing more correctly and meditate in order to clear my mind.
  • Read all the books I have been gathering in order to finish them during he summer. This year I got really excited and I ordered a lot of literature (mostly detective stories and self improvement books), because I thought I would have some more free time during the lockdown, which did not happen. I have books that should last me till Christmas I guess...
  • Keep learning the languages I have started during lockdown. Although this is not recharging, learning is something I love and I have a blast finding out about new things.
I believe that this is a lot, since I am going to be working some hours as well. Let's hope I'll make it that I can be fully recharged, full of energy, motivation and ideas for the next school year.
How about you?
I'd love to read your comments!

Theodora, I love your enthusiastic plans. Your summer is brimming with good ideas for recharging and getting your motivation back. If you do a lot of these things your energy will come back too. I hope you will be able to come back in a few weeks and see your success. I know you will feel better and happy that you made it happen this summer! All the best to you.
