lessons with videos

I've been working with videos for quite a while now...
Although you can find lots of material in Youtube and other "teaching" sites, it is a big problem with the German language it is a bit limited.
I've heard about Kubus videos at a seminar, last year I think...
They are a kind if 15-minute documentaries, different people talk about various subjects and you can see the German reality in different fields (young people, music, arts, techology etc)
Goethe Institut provides also the dialogues in PDF form, so, you can develop various kinds of excersises, like General meaning questions, gap fills, matching and of course lots of discussion topics.

Grammar & Writing

Some really teaching interesting ideas presented by Mrs Anna Pilaski, meant for students who have passed level B2.
These learners are expected to:
• Understand the basic idea of complicated texts
• Communicate spontaneously and eloquently
• Express themselves clearly in many various subjects
Here are some activities that can help them practice the language:
• Divide the class into 2 groups
• Give the students 2 different texts
• Students try to describe the text in their own words among their group
• Then students from team A tell students from group B about their story and vice versa
Another activity as a follow up could be a Running dictation (with gap filling in higher levels)
• Students form pairs
• Student A tries to memorize their text doing the gap fill exercise
• Student A dictates their text to Student B and vice versa
• Winner is of course the pair with the fewer mistakes

Moodle?

Back with more notes from the German teacher conference...
Today the subject is an electronic classbook which is supposed to help students to contactwith the teacher and with eachother, post their homework, get informed about what has been done in the classroom, if they were absent and generally keep in touch with thge language.
This can be done using a kind of a learning platform like Moodle.
You can have various activities in an e-classbook, like
  • a Forum in which various subjects can be posted and students can write a small paragraph with their opinion as homework
  • a chat room for students and teachers
  • a Data bank with everything that has been taught in the classroom
  • a Glossary with unknown words
  • Wiki in which everyone can contribute
This work is of course voluntary and you can't make the students participate, but I find it a fantastic idea, especially for adult students who cannot always come to the lessons.

This can not only be used for lessons and interaction with students, but also teachers can use it to get in contact with collegues, exchange opinions and also "educate" themselves about the new methods in teaching.
German teachers can use this link: http://my.goethe.de to get an idea
