Is homework a waste of time? (Lecture by Ms Olha Madylus – IP Exhibition, August 2008)

Before I start, I would like to thank Ms Madylus who gave me her permission to publish her work and also because she has been an inspiration to me for so many years. She may not know it, but she has completely changed the way I feel about my work and the way I teach! Keep up the good work!

Is homework important? Should we or should we not give our students homework? It depends actually!

So when is it really a waste of time?

- When students lack the support to do it well…

We cannot expect our students to do things that they haven’t been taught or that are above their level. They just don’t know how to do it!

- When kids in Greece are so overwhelmed with studies, they are so tired to do it well

- When it’s learning by rote. Learning by heart is sometimes not effective.

- When it is just easier to copy off your friend tomorrow (especially True/False or multiple choice questions)

- When we haven’t actually planned how it integrates with what is done in class or considered its value

So what we should think, when we give homework is:

- Does it maximize use of time?

- Do students have the knowledge / skills to do the work alone?

- Does it encourage independence?

- Does it allow for personalization?

- What will students benefit from doing it?

When is it god to give homework?

- When students are well prepared in class to do it on their own

e.g. writing a composition

Have you:

-brainstormed vocabulary?

- pre-taught useful vocabulary?

- reviewed grammar to be used?

- discussed ideas?

-provided input e.g. reading or listening?

- drawn up plans together?

- When there’s a point to doing it…

Examples:

1. Letters to teacher

2. Preparing input for next lesson, e.g. doing research, collecting materials, rehearsing dialogues for taping, designing tasks to be done by classmates.

e.g. find something (Internet, magazines, newspapers, materials) and bring them to class,

Find a text and give it to students to make their own cloze test (missing words are usually pronouns, articles, prepositions, collocations). Mostly teenagers like challenging their friends.

3. Part of an ongoing scheme of work e.g. extensive reading, a project, portfolio work

- When the medium is appealing and tasks integrate with class work, e.g. CD’s from course books

- When homework tasks can be chosen.

Students can choose which exercises they do from workbook or grammar book and with higher levels; they can use newspapers or the Internet and choose the articles they find interest in.

Generic comprehension questions:

Who

What

Where

When

How

Why

Students could also use a “Homework diary” (especially with As, Bs, C Classes)

e.g.

This week:

I read…

I watched…

I used the computer to…

I revised…

I prepared…

My teacher asked me to…

- When parents can help and encourage their children at home…

- We teachers should train/ explain to parents:

A. how they can help children at home, e.g. buying books, videos; reading with kids, asking them to explain what they’ve been doing at school; encourage regular communication with teacher; allowing them to rest / relax at home too!

B. what not to do e.g. Do homework for the child; teach children from their old books; think they know best

- When it’s a pleasure to do…

Why do we set homework?

- Maximize use of time

- Encourage independence

- Allow for personalization

- To increase motivation to learn English?

- Or just because we should?

Skiathos

on the ship

As most of you probably know, Skiathos is a small island, which belongs to the Sporades complex (together with Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros).
This year it has been particularly popular with tourists, due to the film “Mama Mia” which was shot on a small island nearby.
Arriving to the island I saw a busy port – a crowded town… I never expected to see so many people especially after the second half of August!
What I particularly like on the island is the pedestrian zone at night! Full of little shops with useless little souvenirs, I can spend hours and hours browsing!!! Not to mention the bars, restaurants and cafes …
People, people, people … a town full of life!
But of course the island has more to offer than a wonderful night life…
It covers all interests, actually…
For culture lovers, you can visit Alexandros Papadiamantis house, he was one of the best Greek writers about 100 years ago, there is a monastery on the other side of the island (I hear the produce wonderful wine there) and there is also the old town, called the Castle. It used to be the old capital city until 1830- it was a fortress and the locals used a wooden ladder to get down to the port! The most popular one is Koukounaries, you can find all kinds of water sports, beach cafes, taverns in the area.
Finally, the beaches of Vassilias, Ahladies, Vromolimnos, Kolios, Troulos, Maratha, Agia Eleni, Agia Paraskevi, Krassas, Nikotsara, Lalaria, Megas Gialos as well as the islet Megali Tsougria worth a visit.

Thessaloniki biennale of Contemporary Art

While visiting the Vyzantine museum today, I found out that the museum is also hosting a photo exhibition in the next building...
Very interesting pictures, unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me, but you can find more info on the project following this link:

Museum day today!

It is really strange - most people who live in a city have never visited its various sites! I thought it was about time to change all that and decided to actually go to some places and find out more about my hometown!

Last week it was the archaeological museum, where we found out about various aspects of the culture which developed in Macedonia, starting from prehistory until the first Christian centuries.

http://www.amth.gr/

This week it goes to the Byzantine Museum which presents art, ideology, social structure and religion as well as political and everyday life during the byzantine years.

Both museums are really worth visiting...

Running Blind - Lee Child

Review
Amazon.com

Jack Reacher is back, dragged into what looks like a series of grisly serial murders by a team of FBI profilers who aren't totally sure he's not the killer they're looking for, but believe that even if he isn't, he's smart enough to help them find the real killer. And what they've got on the ex-MP, who's starred in three previous Lee Child thrillers (Tripwire, Die Trying, Killing Floor), is enough to ensure his grudging cooperation: phony charges stemming from Reacher's inadvertent involvement in a protection shakedown and the threat of harm to the woman he loves. The killer's victims have only one thing in common--all of them brought sexual harassment charges against their military superiors and all resigned from the army after winning their cases. The manner, if not the cause, of their deaths is gruesomely the same: they died in their own bathtubs, covered in gallons of camouflage paint, but they didn't drown and they weren't shot, strangled, poisoned, or attacked. Even the FBI forensic specialists can't figure out why they seem to have gone willingly to their mysterious deaths. Reacher isn't sure whether the killings are an elaborate cover-up for corruption involving stolen military hardware or the work of a maniac who's smart enough to leave absolutely no clues behind. This compelling, iconic antihero dead-ends in a lot of alleys before he finally figures it out, but every one is worth exploring and the suspense doesn't let up for a second. The ending will come as a complete surprise to even the most careful reader, and as Reacher strides off into the sunset, you'll wonder what's in store for him in his next adventure. --Jane Adams --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I came across this book in Marmaras and to tell you the truth I overpaid for it - 12,60 Euros - I could have bought it with 8 Euros in Thessaloniki!! But anyway! I was so desperate to find a new book (so bored I am on the beach!!!)
To my surprise, I had already read the particular book, but I didn't realize it in the beginning, because the title was different! It seems that the american version is called "Running Blind", while the European one is called "The Visitor"!!! Now I have both in my book shelves! I guess I'll start a collection!!! Anyone got the Asian version?

How do you spend your time on the beach?

I am the lazy type!!! I could spend hours and hours reading, solving crossword puzzles or just gazing at the water and the people...

(This time I was actually lesson planning... I found some great articles I could use in my lessons... My students... beware!! I am working for you even on holiday!!!)

How about you? Are you the lazy type like me?
Or do you prefer something more active?

Porto Coufo

About 1 km away from Toroni, this small place is known as the largest and safest natural harbour in Greece.
I have heard lots of stories, like the one of the hiding submarines during the second world war.
Nowadays, full of fisherboats and taverns, an idyllic place for a wonderful night out...

Way to go Angela!!!

Angela passed the FCE and Michigan exam, we just got the results!! Good job my dear!!!
